Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, which was founded way back in the year 1925 and affiliated to FICCI, New Delhi, is a nodal agency rendering its service for propelling the growth of Trade and Industries in and around Tuticorin. It gives immense satisfaction to the Indian Chamber to see the phenomenal growth of Tuticorin in all segments such as Industry, Trade, Shipping, etc.
We wish to highlight that the “Union Government” has given approval for the Tuticorin “Outer Harbour Project” and also Government of Tamilnadu has proposed “Madurai – Tuticorin Industrial Corridor”. It is now been selected under the centre’s “Smart City Mission”.Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry is pleased to submit this memorandum for the favourable consideration.
Goods & Passengers Amenities;- a) Doubling Line between Tuticorin and Madurai: (158.8 km)
This doubling line is very much important for goods movement. As Tuticorin is a major port, there are lot of goods movement from and to Tuticorin Port to places in South and North Indian States. At present goods trains and passengers train have to run on single track resulting in delay in goods movement. To tide over this problem, doubling line between Tuticorin and Madurai is absolutely necessary. If this is done there is ample scope for increase in the quantum of cargo handling in Tuticorin port. To cite for an example, New Mangalore Port has achieved a tremendous growth in cargo handling in the recent years due to development of Railway infrastructure.
b) Intercity Railway service between Tuticorin and Madurai:-
This service is much needed because Madurai happens to be the next biggest city falling within 150KMs and people are having lot of interests to frequent to this city for business and other purposes. Also this facility will help the people to catch the express trains bound for other southern and north Indian cities.
c) New Train Service to Kollam / Mangalore / Day Train Service to Coimbatore:-We request you to start train service to Kollam & Mangalore directly from Tuticorin. Wherein it will inter link and will promote, passenger traffic and also goods movements still better in this region we could find that lof of Passengers who are now working in Heavy Water Project, Power Projects, Sterlite, Spic, DCWhail from north india they can utilized this new train service.
Re-introduction of Tuticorin – Coimbatore daytime intercity express which ran in Meter gauge:-This train was discontinued in the year 1992 with the train number 149/150 for the reason of gauge conversion. This passenger train was a major link between the two cities in the day time and it was a very successful passenger train. Currently, Tuticorin has a daily night link express (TN-CBE-TN Link Express: Train NO: 16611/16612) but we don’t have a train connecting Tuticorin and Coimbatore in the morning time. Since the gauge conversion is complete in the entire stretch of Dindigul Junction – Pollachi Junction – Podanur Junction, we request you to re-introducing this day train for benefit of the passengers in this route.
d) Reduction of travel time or Diversion of Tuticorin – Mysore – Tuticorin express (TN-MYS –TN Train No: 16235/16236) via Namakkal. The train must depart form Tuticorin station by 17:50 hrs and must arrive in Tuticorin station by 09:30 hrs.
Reduction of Travel Time of Pearl City Express Tuticorin to Chennai Egmore. This Trainshould Reach Egmore by 7.15am, but it always run very late causing hardship to passengers.
e) Allot more fund for the formation of New Railway Route between Tuticorin and Madurai (Via) Arupukottai (143.5Km):-
This project will shorten the route and also improve the industrial growth of this Tamilnadu Southern District Region and for the formation of Madurai – Tuticorin Industrial corridor (MTI Corridor) proposed by the Government of Tamilnadu.
f) New railway line to be formed between Melamarthur and VOC Port to be expedited on priority basis
g) Expedite the construction work of ROB 23A near Melavittan Railway Station, which is causing great hindrance to the heavy vehicle movement.
h) Modernisation of Railway Station :-Tuticorin Railway Station, passenger amenities have to be improved by providingproper lighting, give face-lift to the Railway Station Building Elevation, drinking water facility, A/c Donmitary Accommodation / Retiring room and Landscaping.
Tuticorin being an ‘A’ Grade station doesn’t have a refreshment stall in the station premises. Passengers are left to an agitated situation of running outside the station to buy water bottles and milk for kids. This is causing a huge inconvenience to the passengers who are travelling by trains.
Thoothukudi Railway station is provided with a stairway only. Senior citizens, disabled peoples and ladies with toddlers arriving / leaving via plat form No.2find it very difficult to climb up through the stairways. Hence, setting up of escalator and lift service will be a part of modernization of Thoothukudi which is already ‘A’ grade railway station.
Ensure that the Coimbatore- Tuticorin Express Train arrive in Platform No.1 in Tuticorin Railway Station for the benefit of all passengers & Senior Citizens
Also, we request the Railways to take steps to install signals in the third platform and make it operational so that trains can arrive and depart from the third platform also.
